Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act
Legislative Update
The National Breast Cancer Coalition continues to fight for passage of the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (BCERA) and for funding for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (DOD BCRP).
Contact Congress and ask them to co-sponsor the Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S. 757/HR 2231). The Act would establish a national strategy to study the links between the environment and breast cancer. This legislation would authorize the NIEHS to develop a peer-reviewed research program of grants for the establishment of collaborative centers of research to study environmental factors that are believed to contribute to the development of breast cancer. Specifically, $30 million per year in fiscal years 2007-2012 would be authorized for this purpose. Thank the legislators who are co-sponsors of the Act: Rep. Sanford Bishop, Rep. Cynthia McKinney, Rep. John Lewis, Rep. Charlie Norwood, Rep. John Barrow, Rep. David Scott. Ask other members of Georgia's Congressional Delegation to co-sponsor the Act: Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Sen. Johnny Isakson, Rep. Jack Kingston, Rep. James Marshall, Rep. Tom Price, Rep. John Linder, Rep. Lynn A. Westmoreland, Rep. Nathan Deal, Rep. Phil Gingrey.
We need your support for this important cause. Check out the NBCC Legislative & Public Policy Priorities page.
DOD Breast Cancer Research Program
The DOD peer-reviewed Breast Cancer Research Program, in conjunction with research done at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is vital to helping us find the prevention of and cure for breast cancer. This program should be funded at $150 million because it:
- Is Unique - The BCRP is a one-of-a-kind research program because of its innovative grants and structure, which bring scientists and consumers together to make policy decisions at every step.
- Is a Demonstrated Success - This program's success has been corroborated in a number of arenas: in two separate, highly favorable program reviews by the Institute of Medicine (IOM), at three public meetings called the "Era of Hope" to report the program's progress, and in Congressional Committee report language recommending this program continue.
- Has Strong Bipartisan Support - Annually, a bipartisan group of Senators and Representatives circulates a letter, signed by more than half the members of Congress, to the Chairman and Ranking Member of the DOD Appropriations Subcommittee, asking for continued program funding. This year's letter included over 250 signatures in support of the BCRP
